A summary of what's happening in the REBOL community.

The week ending 22th Oct 2006

Carl Sassenrath blogged, he is changing directions a bit:

Goes more for newbie-documentation:
"Well, tasks are only as important as you make them. Last weekend I received an email from a new user, and that was the final straw. I gave in and took out a few hours to try my hand at some very basic intros. They are not intended to be a replacement for the other tutorials, but to provide a really basic starting point for new users. Eventually I will fold a few of the older docs (like Ten Steps) into this one."

Rebol2 gets some attention for bugfixes, instead of 100% into Rebol3:
"We have scheduled a number of updates to REBOL over the next couple weeks.

Some updates to scripts:

Rebolek : I've just uploaded TextureLab version 0.3.2 to REBOL.ORG .

Geomol: Apollo 1.4.1 released. The pictures are a collection of the pictures released on the website: http://www.apolloarchive.com/

The week ending 15 Oct 2006

Hot from the 'test' release of Cheyenne, Nenad 'DocKimbel' has started a blog about Cheyenne.

INCLUDE , a module manager by Ladislav has been updated.
More information about INCLUDE can be found here >> http://www.fm.tul.cz/~ladislav/rebol/include.html

The week ending 8th Oct 2006

Maxim has launched "Revault: an initiative to better organise library and re-usable code". Discussion taking place on Rebol3 AltME world.

Carl Sassenrath has been talking about merging the Associative Database Model with Rebol in some way. (see www.adbms.org for an introduction.)

Gabriele continues to improve PDF-Maker 2. Now it can calculate table column widths automatically, and better than web browsers.

Geomol enhances his NicomDoc format with his newly created math dialect.

This week has been building up to DocKimbel's initial release of Cheyenne (now available for download).

The fortnight ending 1st Oct 2006

Rebol.org
Max has released a new version of GLayout after a hiatus of 2.5 years, and retaining 99% VID compatibility. This is an alternate dialect from VID for producing faces, and is in competition with RebGUI.

He promises
  • new visuals
  • extremely stable
  • updated and optimized for v1.3.2 (use of AGG)
  • many new styles (menu, explorer, canvas, generic pop-up, ...)
  • new value inspector allows browsing of live code in a mac-finder type browser
  • automatic scroll-wheel support in scrollpane real-time scrolling
  • many new layout possibilities
Check it out in the library

I believe he will be working on some demos that illustrate it's use. He has written some commercial applications but sadly these can not be released to the public.

The rebol.org package downloader repack has also been upgraded using a new version of Glayout and can be invoked with
do http://www.rebol.org/library/public/repack.r

ZLib
Oldes has a Rebol/Pro version of zlib compression/decompression using a dll. It's a rip file so run it to decompress first.

3flex
Chris Langreiter has updated his 3flex script to work with latest View. It's a map editor that he intends to be used as a knowledge map editor.

Rebol3 Blog
Carl asks for more input on console return values. Personally I think I am in favour of a switch for this!
